Rainbow Drive In is similar to what we would call on the mainland a "hotdog stand," but they don't serve hot dogs, they serve Hawaiian food. Their mahi-mahi (Dorado fillet) is a white, flaky, mild fish that is the most popular dish sold. The mahi-mahi plate costs $11.50 as of press time, and includes two large scoops of white sticky rice, and a large scoop of macaroni salad. Three fillets come with the plate and are served pan-fried.
All food is served on plastic plates. Plastic forks and knives, straws and napkins, tartar sauce, and soy sauce are given upon request.
A large paper glass of ice water costs 50 cents, and the water has a very clean taste. There are no problems with water quality in this area of Oahu.
Rainbow Drive In is located on Kapahulu, near Ala Wai Golf Course, Leonard's Bakery, and Kapahulu Safeway. There is always a long line before reaching the order window, and sometimes there are no parking spots available at the Drive-In itself. There are a dozen picnic tables to sit upon, and they are spaced apart for social distancing. The official address is 3308 Kanaina Ave. Honolulu, HI 96815. Kaimuki · (808) 737-0177. Call-ahead orders are available.
